Roses and Broken Hearts

Blue skies above me Yellow sun hangin’ high Your reflection lyin’ in my plams Silence cast in your smile There’s a girl standing on the corner With a candle and tears in her eyes It’s lonely teardrops Lonely teardrops Come home soon, say it’ll be okay T.V.’s on in the next room Phone lays silent on the chair There’s an emptiness I feel inside Somethin’s gone, somethin’s there Lonely teardrops Lonely teardrops Come home soon, say it’ll be okay Everyone’s callin’ no one’s talkin’ No one knows nothin’, no one’s heard nothin’ All this this time, here I am dyin’ inside With only your mem’ry to keep me strong As I lay here in bed tonight I dream of a better life In the distance the bells are tollin’ A congregation morns the lost Lonely teardrops Lonely teardrops Will my eyes ever dry

Roses and broken hearts the skies painted gray Ghostly statues cleansed in the rain A handful of dirt fallin’ to the ground Fallen without a sound Another young life over before it starts Roses and broken hearts Streets a-lined with cars, a house full of noise Missing in the commotion a familiar voice Laughter and silent prayer That smell still lingerin’ in the air Another young life over before it starts Roses and broken hearts A candle flickers, a face frozen in time Shadows in the mirror in the dead of night Pale moon hidin’ in a sky of rust Youth and beauty given to the dust Another young life over before it starts Roses and broken hearts

Another late night at Connors bar Mickey pours me another shot Back of my mind’s painted in sorrow My stomach tied up in knots Tell me if the def can one day hear And the blind can one day see If you could see my soul Tell me would you recognize me Would I be another shadow A faceless ghost in a crowd Tell me could you recognize me now Hung your picture on the wall It’s the first thing I see when I awaken That pillow that still smells like your hair Lies on your side of the bed alone and forsaken Can imagine heaven as a lovely movie scene Skies of blue, clouds of white, cool rivers of green Forests in the mountains, endless gardens in between Only a black rose there where I should be You were an angel gracing Gods fallen light The North Star guiding me home in the cold, dark twilight In a garden of pretty little things All alone there is rain With you I can’t go on, the black rose still remains

The Jester 04:03
The ghosts of the covenant echo Down the darkened hall of indigo Calling for a coronation, a new king falls victim of pride The Jester claims his leather jacket for the ride The knights enraged at the bishop A house of cards shaking from an earthquake The princess's hand maidens claim immaculate conception As the stables engulf in sacrificial flames The mime dances and mocks the queen The Lords and Ladies have their own desires As into town the Jester rides atop a mighty steed Beside him the aspersion of his feeble minded squire From the castle tower hangs Repuncils gentleman callers Their hands clenching diamonds, their neck encircled in a noose Prince Charming laughs insanely at their cowardly blank stares His eyes glazed, he holds his sword loose Excalibur lays on an altar dripping young mens blood An ill wind holds the fate of the peasants secure The generals all pledge secret allegiance They send young men to die in the foreign lands in the Jesters war The Jester drinks wine and calls it blood Forsaking the creeds that rule this empire A crusade against the pawns adorning black He speaks of his recent "baptism by fire" The white knight crosses the empty courtyard And cries "one o'clock and all's well" The Jester chuckles and whispers to the king "Tis a fine night in the kingdom of hell"

In the End 03:26
Well you say you got a job to do And people say that there ain’t no goodbyes Just a friendly handshake A smile and the promise of “I’ll write” But I can’t say I don’t miss you And that I’m not afraid Will you be coming home again Or will I see you in the end Months have passed since the last word Things have changed here since I last saw you All the things I wish we could’ve shared together Here in my heart is where I carry you I can’t say I don’t love you And that I don’t worry Alone in this town again Promise me you’ll come home in the end There’s a bar in town where people gather And the men come for drinks after work The veteran’s tell their old war stories While I sit and drink my Jack and Coke Jerry waves a hand from across the room “Hey buddy what’ll you have” As I get up to dance with Theresa I can’t help but feel sad Cigarette hanging from my lip I sit down and close my eyes I think of you on the other side of the world again Praying you come home in the end This hymn I sing in your name My own heart I offer to the heavens above Just so you know that I miss you And you’ll always have my love Just know you’re in my mind And I wish you all the best I want you come home safe to me again I don’t wanna wait for heaven in the end

On a dusty street In a strange town The suns burnin’ bright The wings barin’ down Your only protection The fire in your guts A gun in your tremblin’ hand Your blood begins to rush Tell me what do you do When you feel like you’re alone Where can you go, where can you turn If you ain’t got no home This blessed ground Stained in blood and glass You sit alone in the dark Feel the minutes roll pass Had a friend die on Tuesday His wife young and bold Left to raise three kids Back in Jersey all alone Tell me how does it feel When a chill grab you by the bones Memories can’t help when faith fades away And you ain’t got no home Mister I come from the Jersey shore And mister I’ve got this girl Sir, she loves me more Than anything in this world Now I know that I ain’t got much Just these clothes and my pride But I’d sell you my soul To get me outta here alive Tell me where do I run I feel left here on my own How can I live, how can I survive Cause I ain’t got no home

Have you ever looked in a dying mans eyes Have you heard his pleas as he lets out his final cries Have you ever seen blood rush out of the vein The wounds remain, your war’s a dirty game Do you know where the battle is taking place The enemy of you and me has a most familiar face All smoke and mirrors the truth hidden within Here we go its déjà vu all over again This is a prayer for faith This is a prayer for hope There ain’t no use for blood on blood You don’t know how it feels to save a life Or to stand there helpless and watch a man die Aren’t some prices too high in the end Or are we doomed to suffer the same consequences again This is a prayer for solace This is a prayer for peace There ain’t no use for blood on blood Have you ever seen the moon dance at midnight Or the stars twinkle in a starving child’s eyes Can you imagine your child never coming home Bullets fly, people die, the lies live on This is a prayer for creation This is a prayer for unification There ain’t no use for blood on blood

The Rose 03:28
Today the skies fell, the streets began to flood We fled to high ground caked in mud Everything I ever knew just washed away And the rain kept fallin’ throughout the day Another fallen pedal from the rose Another fallen pedal from the rose I remember the way the sun light fell Through the halo in the clouds Oh father tell me it’ll be alright I know helps comin’ but I got my doubts Another fallen pedal from the rose Another fallen pedal from the rose And the water continued to rise Still we stood here with desperation in our eyes Will I live to see the sun rise again They told us they just didn’t know They said there was no way to tell But they’re dry and they’re not here Watching beloved heaven beatin’ to hell Another fallen pedal from the rose Another fallen pedal from the rose

Well mister I’ve always tried to live an honest life I work hard every day, I’m good and true to my wife There are so many shades of gray nothin’s ever white or black When the dream keeps slippin’ away you tend to fall between the cracks Away, away, my dreams are slippin’ away Away, away, the dream is slippin’ away Away, away, caught between the night and day Oh my Lord just so many shades of gray The banks closed on my mortgage, on my front lawn there’s a sign I got nowhere to run to, got no place to hide The money’s all gone now mister but the bills ain’t goin’ away The colors keep on fadin’ leavin’ nothin’ but the gray Away, away, my dreams are slippin’ away Away, away, the dream is slippin’ away Away, away, caught between the night and day Oh my Lord just so many shades of gray My daddy’s work for far too long and never wanted nothin’ in return ‘Cept to give his kids strong morals, provide a humble home Daddy now I’m sorry I didn’t quite understand Now I know all too well responsibility haunts a man Well how can a fella dream, when he’s too scared to sleep How can an honest man survive in a world so full of greed They took everything away now only death and debt remain Oh, oh, just too many shades of gray Away, away, my dreams are slippin’ away Away, away, the dream is slippin’ away Away, away, caught between the night and day Oh my Lord just so many shades of gray They took everything they could take now only death and debt remain Oh oh just too many shades of gray

I got hired to the force back in ‘05 Ten months later I took Maria for my bride We bought a little house, such a beautiful place The bank approved the mortgage with an adjustable rate Soon we’ll hear the patter of tiny feet In our house on a dead end street Now the towns had some tough choices to make Mine was one of the jobs that couldn’t be saved A shake of the hand, “Sorry Jose, I did the best that I can” Maria she tried her best to understand Been reading the want ads in the cool shade of the trees In the yard of our house on a dead end street There just ain’t no work for a guy like me With a BA in a recession economy Unemployment doesn’t give enough pay Now me and Maria have another on the way Sleepless night that betray our dreams Has become life on a dead end street

Dust 03:53
Banker man said there was no more time Politician says there ain’t no work So I took a couple gallons of gas and a match And burnt my life to the dirt Grounded by seeds of greed Raked with doubt and fear Give in to the anger Hear the devil whipserin’ in your ear Let there be blood Let the foundation rust Let it fire, let it burn Down to the dust Night fell, the stars faded The moon hid behind the clouds Smoke rising into the sky From where we built this house Grounded by seeds of greed Raked with doubt and fear Give in to the anger Hear the devil whisperin’ in your ear Let there be blood Let the foundation rust Let it fire, let it burn Down to the dust Air, air, getting’ harder to breathe Life denied by the dark heart of the dream The whole world’s gone to hell I grab my twelve gauge and fifteen shells Our last night together I kiss your neck as you unbutton your blouse Passion lost within blind rage And nothings gonna save me now The tears that we’re cryin’ This time I ain’t gonna miss I’ve got them in my sights darlin’ Revenge tastes as sweet as your kiss Grounded by seeds of greed Raked with doubt and fear Give in to the anger Hear the devil whisperin’ in your ear

Woke up this morning with that bitter taste on your tongue We all knew what was goin’ on We placed our hearts in the wise mens hands Even though we knew somethin’s wrong Blind faith in anything will get you killed Blind faith in anything can be explosive It can destroy everything around you ‘til All that’s left is war and roses We drove that dark highway of no return To where the trees whisper and the moons always red You followed them into a desert of blood and bone And they laid you to rest Blind faith in anything will get you killed Blind faith in anything can be explosive It can destroy everything around you ‘til All that’s left is war and roses They lead us through the valley of Megiddo And said “Eden lies just across the border” And we followed them in search of resolution All we found was a river with no water Tonight as I drive down this road Between the truth and the lies To my left I see the sun risin’ in the distance And bodies piled in the dirt to my right Blind faith in anything will get you killed Blind faith in anything can be explosive It can destroy everything around you until All that’s left is war and roses All that’s left is war and roses All they left is war and roses A last chance at makin’ it work The devils fixed in the rear view mirror There’s a split in the road up ahead Better make a choice before you disappear
